The woman who has brought the news to the people of Everingham, near Pocklington, for more than 18 years has finally hung up her newspaper bag.

Evening Press deliverer Nancy Broadley, 68, decided to officially call it a day after rheumatism made the round too much of a strain.

Residents held a collection and presented her with an ornamental well, built by villager Bernard Watling, to mark the occasion. At the height of her round she delivered papers to almost half the 80 homes in the village.

Nancy said: "I was totally flabbergasted by their wonderful gift because I didn't expect anything. I have seen a lot of changes over the years and I will miss doing the papers."

The Evening Press's head of circulation and marketing James Espin said: "We are highly appreciative of the excellent service that Mrs Broadley has given to York & County Press and our readers.

"We wish her a very long and happy retirement."

Villager Wendy Thompson said: "She has been part of the village for many years and has given us a good service."

Woldgate School pupil Simon Darston has taken over the round.
