Golden oldies Des Wyrill and Barry Petty were to the fore at last night's Costcutter York and District Senior League annual dinner at York Racecourse.

The Thirsk pair picked up the main batting and bowling awards in the premier division.

Wyrill, 54, actually won his own cup, the Des Wyrill Trophy after amassing over 500 runs for an astonishing average of 112.80, even though he missed several weeks of the season through injury.

Petty, who claimed his 1,000th league victim on his 40th birthday, won the Secretary's Cup for bowling after bagging 79 wickets.

Osbaldwick's Ian Wilson won the cup for the most stumpings.

Guest speaker Gladstone Small, the former England and Warwickshire pace bowler, presented the prizes.

The league championship trophy was collected by Duncan Naylor, skipper of Clifton Alliance, whose wicketkeeper David Russell won the young player of the year award, the Bill Pool Memorial Trophy.

To complete a good night for the champions, Australian Ben Higgins was awarded the Tony Frith Trophy for the best overseas player.
