Enterprising Easingwold Golf Club are taking the high-I.Q. road to the St Andrews spiritual home of the game.
The Easingwold quartet of David Pearson, Norman Little, Paul Jordan-Worrall and Harry Awty wielded intelligence rather than irons to breeze into the national final of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club national rules of golf quiz.
The grand final at St Andrews is on Sunday, November 7 when they will be pitting their wits against five other teams for the prize of equipment to the value of £5,000 for their club.
Easingwold's place in the grey-matter grand final was clinched with victory in the north of England regional showdown at Walmersley GC in Bury, Lancashire.
Easingwold faced Wilpshire in the first northern semi-final and their brain cells had to work overtime. Against a team, which has won the national crown twice in the last five years as well as appearing in two other finals, Easingwold had to go to the ninth tie-breaking question before winning.
Messrs Pearson, Little, Jordan-Worrall and Awty enjoyed a much easier triumph in the final, where they pipped Branshaw GC, semi-final conquerors of Frodsham, by two clear points.
The Easingwold four received a decorative plaque and weekend bags and golf balls from Douglas Rae of the R & A rules of golf committee.
