A City centre pub was forced to close after it was damaged when trouble flared before York City's game with Hull City.

The Hole In The Wall pub in High Petergate, York, which was forced to close after Hull City fans caused a disturbance there before the match against York City

One arrest was made following the incident in High Petergate on Saturday as fans made their way towards the match.

The Hole In The Wall pub stopped trading while staff cleared up the mess, believed to have been caused by visiting Hull fans.

An eyewitness to the incident said: "A crowd of about 30 massed outside the Hole In The Wall pub and started banging on the windows.

"Then they steamed in one after the other and it looked like one of them set a fire extinguisher off inside, then the police arrived and they eventually headed off to the match."

High Petergate was blocked off at Bootham Bar by four police vans, and there were about 20 officers at the scene.

The pub stayed shut for the rest of the day on Saturday and reopened yesterday.

A spokesman said tables and chairs had been thrown and confirmed that a fire extinguisher had been set off.

A man has been charged with criminal damage, a police spokesman said today.

And another man was arrested following an incident at Yates's Wine Lodge when about 30 fans refused to leave the premises when asked to move on by police before the match.

The police spokesman said Hull fans had arrived early by train and extra officers had been put on duty in the city centre.

"We kept tabs on several groups of supporters who went into the city afterwards, but there were no further fracas reported."

British Transport Police said there had been no disturbances as visiting fans made their way home.
