It was exactly a year ago that tiny Reuben Fisher was born at York District Hospital.

David and Joanne Fisher with the painting of York Minster

He struggled from the first day with his breathing, and his young life was tragically cut short just four weeks later.

Today, on the first anniversary of his birth, his parents asked the people and businesses of York to raise money for the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) at the hospital where Reuben was cared for.

They want to give something back to the staff at the unit who helped them through such a difficult time, and ensure that something positive comes out of their loss.

Reuben's father, David, who is a professional artist, has created a stunning painting of the Minster - valued at £1,500 - which will be given to the person, organisation or business which raises the most money for the SCBU.

The aim is to raise £5,000 for specialist equipment which can help ease the breathing of poorly children like Reuben.

"This gives us an opportunity to give something back to a wonderful team who need a lot of support - we have to make something positive out of the whole experience and give some meaning to the death of our son," said Joanne Fisher, of Church Lane, Nether Poppleton.

"Despite all the difficulties and pain that went with it, it was a wonderful experience for us - they are a fantastic and wonderful team, and we cannot thank them enough for their dedication and support."

David echoed the sentiment. He said: "The people at YDH and at the neo-natal unit in Leeds lived and breathed every moment of our agony.

"They are there looking after all these special little people, but it is not just a job to them. They live every moment of it.

"We experienced nothing but generosity and genuine feeling from each one of them."

As well as the painting, there will be 100 limited-edition prints on offer to other fundraisers, and the Fisher's challenge ties in with the SCBU's 15th anniversary ball, to be held at the Gimcrack Room at York Racecourse on November 8.

If you, or your company, would like to raise funds for the SCBU, contact the Fishers on 01904 780737, or write to them at Wilson House, 24 Church Lane, Nether Poppleton, York. To sponsor the Support Group ball or donate raffle prizes, or for tickets to the event, contact 01904 624494 or 634823.
