Before he leaves York after the panto I should like to say what a lovely man Berwick Kaler is.

I was waiting for a friend in the Theatre Royal's Caf, when I saw Berwick with members of the cast. I approached him tentatively, but he was most welcoming.

A genuinely modest Geordie, who loves giving pleasure to people "that's what life's about" he said.

He chatted away for some time, singed an autograph, gave me a hug and said "see you next year".

He was really touched by the 21st celebration cake, and I'm sure he still doesn't understand the warmth in our hearts that the people of York have for him. Long may he return. He wandered off still chatting to everyone, to get ready for his matinee. In panto parlance we are all his Babbies and Bairns. Thanks, Berwick.
