A former personnel manager at Marks & Spencer in York has died after a long and brave fight against Multiple Sclerosis.

Zoe Marks, of Manor Park Road, York, died as a result of pneumonia at York District Hospital.

Her family have paid tribute to her bravery and strength of character.

Zoe's sister, Mary, said: "She was a joy and an inspiration to everyone who knew her.

"And we would like to give our thanks to all the staff on Ward 36 at York District Hospital. They were wonderful and so supportive."

Dean Saville, financial manager at Marks & Spencer, York, said: "Zoe was for many years the 'power behind the throne' in Marks & Spencer, York, serving a succession of managers in her long career as a manager in the personnel department.

"Outwardly stern and with very high standards for both herself and her staff, Zoe will be remembered by many who benefited from her personal kindness towards them in times of trouble.

"Zoe retired from the company some years ago due to ill health.

"However, she maintained close contact with many of her former colleagues in York all of whom marvelled at the way in which she coped with her failing health."

Zoe, who was also a member of Kirk Hammerton Drama Group, moved from the village about 40 years ago when she left school.

She will be sadly missed by her sister Mary, sister-in-law Agar and nieces Kerry and Hazel.

Her funeral service will take place at York Crematorium on January 27 at 11am.

Donations for the Multiple Sclerosis Society will be gratefully received.
