Entertainers including "George Formby" and "Tina Turner" have helped to raise £1,000 to be divided between two good causes.

They were among the acts at a special evening organised by the York Hoboes Rambling Club at South Bank Social Club in October.

Now cheques for £500 each have been presented to St Leonard's Hospice, York, and Martin House Hospice, near Boston Spa.

The rambling club has about 100 members from York and the surrounding area, and one of them, Howard Lee, volunteered to put on an evening's entertainment for the charity the club designated.

The club, which has supported St Leonard's for many years, decided to hold the event for both hospices.

Howard, with his ukulele, and friends from the George Formby Society, organised a night of fun and nostalgia.

The evening was a great success and raised £1,000 from the entrance fee and raffle. Excellent prizes, donated by local businesses, included a dishwasher.

Elaine Marshall, a member of the working party that organised the evening, said: "We were delighted with how much the evening raised and would like to thank all those people who donated prizes for the raffle.

"We are all very grateful for what the hospice does for our community and hope it reaches the target set for the appeal."

Janet Morley, fundraising manager for St Leonard's, said: "Who would have thought of George Formby with his ukulele and Tina Turner at the same event? Simply the best.

"We are grateful to those who helped to make the evening such a success, and it certainly 'turned out nice again' for the appeal."
