York City president John Greenway has issued a plea to fans to get behind the club and cut out the personal vendettas.

The Ryedale MP, who has been named shadow minister for sport, is eager to see the Bootham Crescent club prosper and believes the fans have a big part to play in the side rising up the third division table.

"When I have attended away matches where there are two or three times as many fans supporting their side it makes a big difference when they get behind their team," said Greenway.

"Our last couple of games have seen good performances and, as this is a poor division this season, I think we have a team that is capable of climbing the table and that is entirely possible if we put a good run together.

"But it needs our fans to make a big impact and quite frankly I know a number of supporters who have become fed up with the criticism from the terraces, those people should get behind the team."

City's quest for points continues at Sixfields Stadium tomorrow when they take on sixth in the table Northampton Town, but it is at Bootham Crescent Greenway feels their needs to be a change of atmosphere.

"I wish that a section of our supporters would stop their silly vendetta against the club's chairman and the manager," blasted Greenway.

"The effort they have put in has been rewarded by some outstanding results in the past few weeks and you do wonder just what some of these people really want.

"The job the staff have at the club at present is not an easy one and the fans should be backing those people.

"The fans need to help because they can make an impact."
