University admissions could be "hit hard" by the closure of the Barbican pool, student leaders have claimed.

Ben Harding, president of the athletics union at the University of York, this afternoon underlined the value of swimming as a popular sport and its important role in the rehabilitation of injured athletes.

"It is a disgrace that they are even considering shutting it," he said.

"The closure of the pool, the closest to the university, may be a deciding factor in students coming here or not."

As part of a revamp of leisure services, City of York Council is to look at the possible closure of the Barbican and Yearsley pools.

Although it has been revealed that Yearsley pool may get a reprieve, the future is looking bleak for the Barbican, which needs a £3.4 million modernisation.

The athletics union, responsible for the various student sports club, is joining forces with the Barbican Action Group in gathering signatures to fight the proposed closure.

Only recently, the athletics union had organised a deal whereby their members are eligible for a substantial discount at the Barbican.

"Nearly all our rival universities either have their own pools or at least access to them. This puts us at a disadvantage," Mr Harding added.
