As a contribution to the debate on the Church of England's attitude to divorcees re-marrying in church I should like to relate a true story.
Some time ago the daughter of a friend of mine (a spinster) wished to marry a divorcee, a man whose wife had left him and their children.
This young woman's dearest wish was to be married in the village church but she was refused the request. She was a regular church attender and had worked for the church for a number of years.
I did not discuss the situation with her so I can only imagine her feelings at such treatment. I did discuss the matter with her father and we were not impressed, but that was the ruling at the time.
Whatever the outcome of the Church of England's review of this matter it must make sure that never again will an innocent young Christian girl be denied her dream day in church. Surely circumstances alter cases.
