Mike Thornicroft turns after scoring

City of York first team enjoyed a welcome 2-1 win over a Hull side buoyed by their thrashing of Harrogate in the Northern Counties League premier division the previous week.

York began as they meant to go on, Mark Little receiving the ball from the push-off, passing it long to Chris Dutton who rounded the 'keeper only to see his shot go for a short corner which was cleared.

Rob Hines was outstanding as York continued to dominate, but it was Hull who had the next chance, home 'keeper James Riley making a superb save.

York created a host of chances at the other end, particularly from the left, but Peter Clark in Hull's goal was having a blinder.

However, York took the lead on 20 minutes, when Mike Thornicroft's right-wing cross was turned in superbly by Hines.

Hull came into it as York seemed to lose the plot in the last five minutes of the half, but with Luke Griggs excellent in defence, the visitors' short corners, long corners and goalmouth melees came to nothing.

York began the second half poorly and the visitors took the initiative. Hull got their reward when a right flank free hit ran free in the circle and was tucked home.

Now pegged back, the hosts stepped up the pace and began to create chances again.

A short corner saw them retake the lead, the superb 'keeper saving again only for Thornicroft to hammer in the rebound.

York could have extended their lead in the last few minutes, but Clark saved brilliantly from Dutton, and as it was Thornicroft's strike which proved the winner.
