Two new members of the recently expanded York Cycleworks road race team enjoyed top six finishes during the Dave Shakespeare Memorial Road Race at Dinnington.

Steven Ward, of Driffield, was third in the 33-mile support race and Lloyd Jones, from Harrogate, came sixth.

The main aim this year for 17-year-old Ward is to compete in the world junior championships in Brittany in October.

In the 66-mile main race, York Cycleworks rider Jonathan Muir, from Tockwith, finished eighth in a high quality field, which included national champion John Tanner and British best all-rounder Kevin Dawson.

With seven miles to go, Muir - in a group well behind the leaders - attacked hard but was outsprinted for seventh by Liverpool's Gary Adamson.

Muir said: "I felt good and wanted to try to open up the race as a number of riders in the break weren't working, but when I attacked a second time I was stuck on the front going into a block headwind so couldn't respond to Tanner's counter-attack. But it wasn't too bad a start to the season."

Also riding for Cycleworks was Ali Kay, of Bishopthorpe, who has returned from three weeks' training in Saudi Arabia.
