Police frogmen were today searching the swollen River Wharfe after reports that a man fell off a bridge in Tadcaster.

A police spokesman later confirmed that they believed the missing man was Paul David Butterfield, 30, of Acomb.

The stretch of river around Bridge Street was searched last night and this morning after a number of witnesses came forward.

The underwater search team from York arrived at Tadcaster at 9am today and are "doing everything they can" following the reports, said a police spokesman.

He said:"We are still searching, but have found nothing yet. We are still making inquiries with his family."

The drama unfolded after several witnesses came forward and reported the incident to police. Some of the witnesses are believed to have recognised him as a man who used to work in Tadcaster town centre.

Police said the river was swollen, but they managed to launch the fibre glass boat, which has an outboard motor.

A West Yorkshire Police helicopter and police dogs joined in the search, along with uniformed officers were out this morning conducting a river bank search on foot, but so far to no avail.

A police spokesman said: "At about 7pm yesterday, an incident was reported to the effect that a man had fallen from the river bridge and a full search of the area took place.

"Officers resumed searching the river at 5.30am this morning, and again at 7am."

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact Selby police station on 01757 702596.
