York Ladies are the English Women's Indoor Bowling Association Yetton Trophy champions.

GREEN GODDESSES: York Ladies bowls team with the national Yetton Trophy, held by captain Doreen Smith

They beat pre-tournament favourites Egham from Surrey in the final of the nationwide competition after knocking out Colchester in the semi-finals.

It is the second time York have won the competition, their previous success being in 1988 when they beat Croyden, also from Surrey.

Egham's supporters outnumbered the York backing and helped create an electric atmosphere in which York thrived.

York were on their mettle from the off and led 22-13 at the five ends stage with two rinks winning and two rinks drawing.

However, by ten ends York had opened up a massive 30 shots lead with the score at 51-21 with all four York rinks in front.

The best quartet at that stage was Dot Kennelly, June Clayton, Linda Harrison and skip Pat Napier, who led 17-6.

After 15 ends of play York's lead stood at 31 shots with the score at 72-41 and with the rink of Jeanette Coulson, Sue Kirkpatrick, Melanie Brooke and skip Sue Chilton leading 19-7.

At 18 ends York's lead had been cut to 23 shots but the Egham revival was all too late as York ran out easy 88-60 winners.

The rink of Linda Parker, Joyce Chellin, Sue Tomlinson and skip Carol Instone claimed victory on the last end to give York three winning rinks.

The other rink of Madge Zimnoch, Maureen Walker, Mary Wreglesworth and skip Helen Walker were just edged out 15-12 by the rink skipped by England international Doreen Hankin.

Against Colchester, York led 16-15 after five ends, and by ten ends had increased their lead to four shots with the score standing at 37-33.

This was largely due to the rink of Kennelly, Clayton, Harrison and skip Napier opening up a 16-3 lead.

At 15 ends, York's lead had further increased to 66-38 with the rink of Coulson, Kirkpatrick, Brooke and skip Chilton leading 15-9, and the rink of Zimnoch, Maureen Walker, Wreglesworth and skip Helen Walker leading 18-10.

York maintained the pressure and eventually won 84-64, with rink of Parker, Chelin, Tomlinson and skip Instone pulling right back to only lose by two shots - 19-17 - after being 13-3 down at ten ends.

New Earswick got back to winning ways in their latest Yorkshire League match, hammering Redcar 114-56 shots, with all four rinks winning they secured maximum points.

New Earswick got off to a good start and after five ends led 28-12.

They continued to dominate and after 15 ends the score stood at 74-47.

The best winning rink at home was the rink of Paul Dawson, John Snowden, Dave Birch and skip Gary Bunce, who won 35-10 and the best winning rink away was that of Kevin Fort, Bill Paylor, Bob Howalnd and skip Bob Edwards, who won 29-15.

In the latest round of Hebden Trophy matches, New Earswick beat Ryedale 84-59 with all four rinks winning, maximum points were secured.

With New Earswick only needing one point to qualify for the play-off final, the maximum point victory saw them through in style.

The best of the four winning rinks was that of Ken Lippett, Paul Jackson, Ron Wood and skip Malcolm Beavers, who won 25-17.

In the other Hebden Trophy game, York played Thornaby with the home and away rinks playing at different times but this worked in York's favour with the two rinks playing at York starting at noon setting up an unassailable lead.

That left the away rinks with the luxury of knowing the game was virtually safe and York went on to win the match 83-67.
