Evening Press Reader's Letter

A pensioner says a proposed zebra crossing in Acomb's Beckfield Lane would be in the wrong place, (Evening Press, February 24).

Mr Morrissey visited my 'surgery' about this and raised a number of questions.

However, I would like to answer a few of his concerns here because this is an issue of public concern. The reason why Option B, a crossing outside the shops, was not voted on was that although it had been identified by residents as a 'favoured' crossing place, it would not have been implemented by the highways department on the grounds of safety.

A photographic presentation at the forum highlighted the concerns of the highways department, especially the nearby bus lay-by, with explanations given in the briefing before the vote.

As experts they do have knowledge when it comes to safety and this should be respected. This safety aspect was also expressed by a resident when opinions were sought, by questionnaire, from the neighbourhood officer of nearby households.

The site of the crossing is not 100 yards away from the shops, more in the region of 50. No matter where a crossing is placed it will only be used by those who either need to use it, or think about their personal safety.
