CITY of York under-10s mixed team were in excellent form as they scooped first place in the Wakefield Hockey Club's Centenary junior tournament.

They faced each of their opponents twice and stunned the hosts by beating them 8-1 and then 1-0, before going on to do a double over Doncaster 2-0 and 1-0.

The only upset was when they went down 1-0 to Huddersfield outfit Almondbury, but they bounced back to beat them 1-0 and clinch the trophy.

Hayley Wardle led the goal scoring rankings with five, and others to contribute were Abigail Wardle (2), Hannah Longster (2), Judith Evans (2), Oliver Cambridge and Jonathan Cambridge.

In the same tournament trophies were also collected by City of York under-14s in the boys' and girls' sections.

The girls started impressively, with Rhian Jones and Katie Longbottom scoring three goals each as York notched 2-0 wins over Wakefield Blacks, Almondbury and Ben Rhydding.

They followed that with a 1-1 draw with Colwyn Bay, Samanatha Fenning scoring, and that was enough to secure first place despite going down 1-0 to Wakefield Greens.

The boys were unbeaten, starting with a 2-0 win over Ben Rhydding, Simon Casterton and John Raper on target, then beating Almondbury 3-0 with two Raper goals and a Luke Ramli penalty.

Raper again scored as York beat Colwyn Bay 'B' 3-0, Ramli and Alex Cockram also being on targe. Cockram added to his tally with both goals in a 2-0 win over Wakefield.

York finished with a 2-2 draw against Colwyn Bay 'A', Raper and Cockram scoring.

City of York boys' under-12s found it harder going and managed only the consolation of a 0-0 draw against Almondbury after defeats by Colwyn Bay 3-0, Bradford 4-0, and Wakefield 2-0.

City of York boys' under-16s fared better and finished fourth in their section, but their only win was a 1-0 success over Bradford thanks to a John Raper goal.

York had goalless draws with Almondbury and Ben Rhydding and tied 2-2 with Wakefield, James Smith hitting both goals.

In York's other game Oliver Couttie scored in a 2-1 defeat by Colwyn Bay.

A GOLDEN goal settled City of York 'B' team's friendly match against Adel.

A tight game ended 2-2, Matthew Todd twice equalising for York. It was agreed to play for a winner, which the Leeds side scored.

City of York 'C' team's game against with Adel 'C' proved something of a mis-match as the Leeds outfit won 5-1.

Adel scrambled the opening goal in the first five minutes and York had to be reasonably satisfied that they reached the interval trailing by only one goal.

In the second half Adel hammered in two short corners and then raids on the left flank produced two more goals.

York scored in the last five minutes when a Russell Grant shot was stopped on the line by a foot and Alex Fletcher scored from from the resultant penalty flick.

City of York 'D' were soon one down to Adel 'D', but a reorganisation in defence helped York to get back into the game and they earned a 1-1 draw when John Inglis powered in an equaliser from a short corner.
