FORGET Chinese, Indian or pizza - a York chip shop is to deliver traditional fish and chips door-to-door.

Richard Jackson, who has run the Holgate Chippy, in Holgate Road, for 18 months, with his partner Denise Enwright, hatched the idea after customers kept phoning to ask if he provided a delivery service.

Mr Jackson said: "I thought it would be ideal for people without transport, single parents and pensioners. "Unfortunately we can only take orders from people living on this side of the river because that is what delays your time. I don't think fish and chips travel as well as something like pizzas."

Mr Jackson will transport the food in his car.

He said: "It will be very much like a community service. It's a local chip shop for local people. If somebody wants a bag of sugar, tea bags or a pint of milk with their order, we will deliver these as well."

Other innovative ideas to come from the chip shop have included a varied menu featuring Thai food and chicken kebabs.

The next-door shop unit was also converted into a 30-seater caf in February. "I don't think anybody has ever delivered fish and chips before," added Mr Jackson.

"We are hoping for a big response."

The chip shop will only take delivery orders for £5 or over, and delivery times are from 5pm to 10.30pm Thursdays to Sundays.
