FORMER York City starlet Jonathan Greening looks set to do his former club a financial favour having made his peace with Sir Alex Ferguson.

Reports suggest Scarborough-born youngster Greening is set to sign an extension to his current contract at Manchester United ends after being placed on the transfer-list in January.

United were reportedly looking for a fee of around £1million to £2million for Greening and with City set to collect 20 per cent of any sale the Bootham Crescent coffers could have been swelled by between £200,000 to £400,000.

However, by pledging his future to Old Trafford City can expect an even better return on the 21-year-old who joined United from York in March 1998.

Under the terms of that deal, City were paid £350,000 initially and collect £100,000 for every five first team appearances up to 50 he makes for the champions.

That would net the Minstermen more than £1million, but so far Greening's United appearances over 25 months number just 14, including his full Premiership debut against Watford on Saturday.

As first reported in the Evening Press, Ferguson put Greening on the Old Trafford transfer list after the promising forward refused to agree to the club's fresh terms.

Ferguson hinted that the England Under-21 international, was demanding too much money.

Everton, Sheffield Wednesday, Tottenham Hotspur, Charlton Athletic and Scottish giants Glasgow Celtic were among a string of clubs said to be monitoring developments.

Greening's first-team aspirations had been put on hold following the breakdown in negotiations, although he continued to play for United's reserves and he is the top scorer for Mike Phelan's side.

After Saturday's first public sign of a backdown at Vicarage Road, United solicitor and director Maurice Watkins has confirmed that talks have resumed.

Now both sides are close to agreeing terms and Greening is expected to sign a new contract once the season ends.

Putting pen to paper will increase the chances of Greening appearing for the Red Devils at his former home when United take on City at Bootham Crescent in a pre-season friendly on July 29.

City held a second marketing workshop to look for ways to improve the matchday experience for fans.

Participants at the workshop included club personnel and eight supporters with marketing and business expertise.

Workshop chairman Josh Easby, who runs the "There's Only One Arthur Bottom" e-mail newsletter, said the supporters who had taken part in the first workshop last September were impressed by how much progress the club had made on strategies devised at that meeting.

He said: "The club now has a database of its fans, a full time public relations officer and has worked very hard on attracting young fans to Bootham Crescent."

Season ticket holders have until the end of this week to purchase their seats for the Minstermen's pre-season friendly against Manchester United on July 29.

Tickets not bought before Friday will then go on general sale.

Bootham Crescent plays host to two Mitchell League Under-12 cup finals tonight, kick-off 6pm and 7.15pm. Admission costs £1 for adults and 50p for juniors and concessions.
