A WOMAN train passenger lashed out at another woman when a case of "rail rage" broke out near a North Yorkshire railway station.

One woman was arrested for assault after the incident on a train which became stuck 50 yards outside Hammerton station, between York and Harrogate. It is believed it hit a cycle on the track.

Tempers began to fray when the 18.16 service from York to Leeds came to a halt on Saturday evening.

Sergeant Michael Barber, of the British Transport Police, said: "As a result of the delays, some passengers became upset. The altercation started because one passenger got angry with rail staff."

It is understood that a woman passenger then may have told the angry passenger to mind his language, at which his partner, another woman, allegedly assaulted the first woman.

"The police were called, and the lady was arrested for a public order offence," he said.

"Another male passenger was reported for public order. Inquiries are ongoing because of the number of witnesses."

Northern Spirit, which runs the service, was contacted for its comment on the incident, but their spokesman was unavailable as we went to press.
