THE oldest bowling club in York celebrated their centenary season on Sunday with a special day at their Front Street green.

Acomb Bowling Club, which was founded by a group of railwaymen back in 1900 on land behind the Poacher public house, where they still reside today, had a big get-together of past and present members.

They reunited at the club's unique clubhouse, which was originally a renovated first class railway carriage. Now over 100 years old, that carriage still remains as part of the pavilion, albeit after further renovation and extension.

Having seen membership hit a peak of over 100 about 20 years ago, the club now has about 60 members, including George Dawes MBE, York's former chief fire officer.

They are, however, keen to recruit new members and anyone interested should contact secretary Danny Watson on 01904 702788.
