HEATHER Causnett (May 23) feels Prince Charles should have far more influence on how this country is run, with his views taken into account when changes are considered.
I disagree. Charles is fully entitled to express his opinions, but they should not be of any greater importance than the views of the rest of us.
Mrs Causnett also feels the Royal Family 'bring a touch of magic and splendour to our lives'. I doubt if many people get such a thrill from Royalty. I certainly don't!
What would anti-Royalists put in their place, she asks? Look no further than the Republic of Ireland, Mrs Causnett. Like Britain they have an elected Government but instead of elitist, undemocratic, costly Royalty they have an elected President. Unlike the ghastly American-style presidency the Irish traditionally have a non-political diplomatic figurehead whose role is relatively low-profile and low-cost.
No wonder republicans in Northern Ireland want radical changes there.
