A PAINTING created nearly 300 years ago by an artist living beside York Minster is expected to sell for £30,000 this month.

Philipe Mercier's The Young Artists is going under the hammer at Sotheby's sale of British pictures on June 15.

The picture, which shows three boys at work on a painting, was produced in 1739.

At the time, Mercier was living in a large house in the precincts of the Minster.

A Sotheby's spokesperson said: "Mercier's stay in York was very successful as he attracted important local patrons such as the Duke of Leeds."
