PIPERS, brass bands and Scottish dancers gave a rousing presentation at York Racecourse yesterday, despite the wet weather, to help raise money for charity.

The Scottish Millennium Tattoo in the Silver Ring brought together pipes and drums from across the North of England in aid of our Hospice 2000 Appeal and Marie Curie Cancer Care.

The City of York Pipe Band joined nine pipe bands, from Bradford, Leeds, Hull, Scunthorpe and Nottinghamshire, two brass bands and Scottish dancers for a display of music and marching.

The bands played individually, then all came together for a grand finale, organised by Bob Orr, Pipe Major of the City of York Pipe Band.

Special "lucky programmes" gave away generous prizes donated by supporters, including British Trust Hotels, Middlethorpe Hall Hotel, and RAF Linton-on-Ouse.

The event, funded by the Millennium Commission and the Arts Council of England, and sponsored by RAF Linton-on-Ouse and Hogg the Builder, was heralded a huge success.

Janet Morley, fundraising organiser for St Leonard's, said: "It was a wonderful day.

"And we didn't even get wet - although it was very cold. The weather was as kind as it could be at the moment.

"The audience was small, but they were treated to a spectacular event."
