I READ with interest 'One El of a cheek' (June 3). In my opinion that's putting it mildly.

City of York Council have increased the number of special events being held in Parliament Street year on year. They can't call them markets, as that would contravene the Royal Charter, which they own, which stops other markets being held within a six mile radius of York Newgate market. So why doesn't York market management get on with the job they are being paid to do, and promote and manage York market?

The market puts £600,000 a year into the council coffers, but there are empty stalls every day of the week. This market should be the jewel in the crown of York city centre. Instead it is dilapidated and under-achieving. Ratepayers' money is being lost, money that should be going into the council budget.

The question has been asked many times by traders on York market: how much rent are the organisers of these special events paying? Because one thing is for sure, the ratepayers of York are picking up the bills for cleaning and so forth.

If we are going to have these so called "special events" taking place on prime sites in the centre of York, let's get the visitors paying the going rate for the site, and not let them be subsidised by the ratepayers of York and the York market traders!
