THE walls of York are not quite as tough to walk as the Great Wall of China, but they are all part of the preparation for a woman determined to help find answers to a baffling illness that claimed her baby daughter's life.

Amy Charlton, of Askham Richard, near York, is getting ready for an epic trek across China, which will include the Great Wall as well as walking to the heart of Beijing.

Last year her 14-month-old daughter, Molly Fyfe, died from Sudeen Infant Death Syndrome, often known as cot death, at Amy's former home in Acomb, York.

Amy, aged 24, is embarking on her expedition in September to raise cash for the Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths, which funds research into the syndrome.

Helping her to get into the right shape for the arduous journey is local health club Fitness First at Clifton Moor, which has put her on a fitness programme.

Elaine Arnold, of Fitness First, said: "Amy's story is very sad and we feel privileged to support her in this very just cause and personal challenge."

The club is also backing her with a joint promotion where it will give guest passes for use of all its facilities for three days for £3, with all the funds going to Amy's fund.

Amy said she had already raised over £3,000, with the help of a very successful ceilidh last month, and her grandmother, Irene Lewis, had raised £500 for her and was holding a coffee morning at Askham Richard tomorrow.

She said the work with Fitness First and the support she was getting was a big help.

"When everyone encourages me I feel really proud that I'm doing it," Amy said.
