GOALS are proving hard to come by at York College's Football Academy.

The academy, run in partnership with York City, has been hit by the theft of a portable goal from a training pitch at its former York Sixth Form College base, off Sim Balk Lane.

The theft has left FA Academy director and former York City star Gordon Staniforth fuming.

Staniforth believes the full-size aluminium goal, one of a pair worth £5,000, was dismantled for scrap as it would have been too heavy to carry.

The thieves cut through chains but left parts of the goal behind, making it impossible to reassemble.

"These are the only goals we have got and while we can work with one we can only do so much," explained Staniforth, who is also a former Football in the Community officer at Bootham Crescent.

"We have had a great season as a course and are expecting an intake of 40 new students in August so this a costly blow."

Anyone who has seen the goals or has information about the theft can contact Staniforth at York College on 01904 770482.
