WITH the greatest respect, I would like to question the points put forward by the City of York Council's spokesperson about the closure of Dales Lane, Heworth (July 20).

Firstly, after attending the local forum which was unanimously in favour of the Lane being reopened and talking to local residents, I would be pleased to be informed of the widespread support they were talking about.

Secondly, when the residents were consulted on the outline plan for the area this lane was not mentioned. So how is it now part of the plan?

Thirdly, it was suggested 700 vehicles a day could use this road, surely common logic suggests that these same vehicles would then use Heworth village which is equally a residential area.

Fourthly, with regard to safety the extra pressure put on the village has caused a greater danger to both pedestrians and road users alike. As well as there being two bus stops on the route, numerous children go this way to the secondary school. There is also sheltered accommodation for the elderly and they have great difficulty crossing the road with the increased volume of traffic, especially when wanting to catch a bus.

Finally have we now found out the council's answer to illegal parking? Just shut the road!

This idea has been ill conceived without any consultation with the residents and shows our 'listening council' does so with deaf ears if at all.
