THE new coach of York Wasps is expected to be installed this weekend.

The final interview will take place on Friday with an announcement likely on Saturday or Monday at the latest.

Chief executive Ann Garvey revealed six applicants were in the running for the vacant post, including Garry Atkins who has been in charge since Dean Robinson's departure in March.

She said: "We are on to the second interviews. One took place last week and we did three yesterday. We hoped we would be able to make an announcement earlier but the final interview is on Friday due to not being able to get an earlier date with the applicant."

All the shortlisted candidates are former players, some of whom are currently coaching at other clubs.

One appointment which has been made is a new commercial and marketing manager.

Manchester-based Paul Scanlon-Wells will work alongside voluntary commercial manager Gary Hall on a commission-only basis.

He has been employed by Oldham in an administrative capacity and was formerly secretary with Carlisle where he was involved with the Lottery, canvassing, club shop and media work.

"He appears to have done an excellent job there," said Garvey. "He seems to have made quite a lot of money in anything he's done and the people he's worked for so we are looking forward to working alongside him, together with Gary (Hall)."

She stressed the appointment of Scanlon-Wells was no reflection on Hall, who has done a fine job since offering his services towards the end of the season.

However, he spends much of him time working away - he is currently in Australia - and Garvey said they needed to maintain their search for sponsors at all times.

Scanlon-Wells will continue to work from his Manchester home and will not be based in the Wasps office.

Budding songwriters are reminded that this weekend is the closing date for the Wasps competition to come up with a new club anthem.

Entries can be in the form of an innovative new song, fresh lyrics to an existing tune or a chant. Written or taped entries will be accepted.

The winner will receive one of next season's new replica shirts and a VIP day at a match as a guest of the directors.

The runner-up will receive a prize of a rugby ball and Wasps polo shirt.

Entries should be sent to Ann Garvey at Huntington Stadium. For details ring 01904 634636.
