FEW will mourn the demise of The Citizen, City of York Council's free newspaper. It was widely regarded as the house journal of the Labour group which accounts for its unpopularity. When each new round of cuts was announced, the first cry from opposition politicians and our readers alike was "axe The Citizen and its £70,000 bill".

Now the axe has fallen. For the team that produced what was an award-winning newspaper, that is a shame. But the news broke on the day Lord Neill was renewing his call for a cull of State-sponsored spin. Both peers and the public have lost their patience with propaganda.
