DJS fed up with the lack of opportunities in York are fleeing to the coast - and taking scores of clubbers with them.

Frustrated by the closure of the Arts Centre last year, the young group of entrepreneurs, known as End Crew, are bussing out York clubbers tonight to Hull.

They are hoping to take as many as 100 young people across on coaches to the Enigma nightclub in Witham, Hull, to give them "the kind of night you can't get in York any more".

Alice Shuttleworth, a 21-year-old DJ and waitress at Victor J's caf-bar in York, is determined to continue entertaining the clubbers of York despite the lack of opportunity in her home city.

"There is simply nothing to do here any more," she told the Evening Press.

"The Arts Centre had always been the hub of activity, and after its closure people were struggling to find a decent venue for clubbing.

"There have been occasional events at the De Grey rooms, but it is not the ideal venue and we couldn't use it as regularly as we would have liked."

She said that she was disappointed not to be able to run nights in York, and although the venue in Hull was "perfect" she would still like to continue organising events here.

"I think a lot of the problem is that people in York think that we are just a load of idiotic drug-crazed lunatics but we're just a load of nice people trying to have a good time," she added.

The Hull club is split into three rooms playing techno groove, trance, breakbeat and drum 'n' bass.

"We want to try and keep the vibe going in York," continued Alice, spokesman for the group which includes a photographer, a fish and chip shop worker and a website designer.

"And if the only way is to ship people off to Hull, then that is what we'll do."

Tonight is the first of the monthly club nights with coaches leaving from the War Monument at Station Rise at 7.30pm.
