A VISITING Sudanese teacher will be kicked out of the country after he molested two students at the University of York.

But first Abdelkrim Elawid Abuzeid, 58, must finish a 30-day jail sentence for the indecent assaults he carried out in broad daylight in full public view.

As he was taken in handcuffs down the cell steps at York Magistrates Court, he called out: "I am sorry for what I did. I regret everything I have done. When can I go home?"

He now faces disgrace and possible disciplinary action in Sudan where his behaviour would "in no way be tolerated," said his solicitor Harry Bayman.

But he thought standards were different in England because he saw people he regarded as "very scantily clothed."

Abuzeid, a senior long-serving teacher in the Muslim part of Sudan, won a national competition to come on a course for teachers of English at York funded by the British Council and should have passed on his new knowledge to other Sudanese teachers.

Presiding magistrate, Barbara Scott, told him: "You can expect to be released on August 8. On that day, you will be deported from this country as an unwelcome guest."

They jailed him for 30 days. He has already spent ten days on remand and it is normal for prisoners to gain remission of half of their sentence.

Abuzeid pleaded guilty to two charges of indecent assault.

Mr Bayman said the students immediately raised the alarm and within an hour he was in police custody.

The incidents had occurred on his first full day in York.

He had arrived earlier than his fellow course attendees and had wanted to meet people.

Since then he had been barred from the university and had been unable to go on the course he had come for.
