THIRSK had a surprisingly easy victory in the final of the Myers Burnell Cup beating Easingwold by 56 runs at York's Clifton Park ground.

After finishing runners-up to Clifton Alliance last season, Thirsk claimed their second success in three years with skipper David Greenlay leading the North Yorkshire side to victory.

Their hopes looked a little fragile at first as Jason Sargent, who ended with figures of three for 19, made early in-roads into their order, but they were rescued by an excellent knock of 57 from Des Wyrill as they set a total of 125-4 from their allotted 16 eight ball overs.

Easingwold's powerful batting line-up must have fancied their chances but they were reduced to three runs for three wickets as Lynton McCrae, who took three for 26, struck.

Martin Robinson, 53, turned Easingwold around but they ran into trouble once more and were ousted for 99.

Thirsk's second innings secured success with a knock of 66 from New Zealander Andrew Hawke, which earned him the man-of-the-match award, setting them up for a score of 178-6.

Easingwold were bold in their assault on a target of 205 for victory with first Jonathan Marwood (30) and then Martyn Piercy (45) and Dan Copeland (34), all trying to push the pace but the asking rate proved too much.

Former West Indian Test star Collis King rolled back the years to take Stillington to a stunning victory in the final of the York and District Senior Cricket League's Edward Readman Trophy over Beverley at Whitkirk.

He blasted an unbeaten 128 as the villagers overhauled Beverley's total of 183 for 6 with four wickets in hand after requiring 44 off the last three overs.

King was able to get the strike and took 13 off the 38th and 39th overs before smashing three sixes off the first four balls off the final over to win the game in spectacular fashion.

The platform for Beverley's total was a second wicket stand of 87 between Richard Taylor (53) and Jamie Mitchell (39) with Tom Fordon's 39 boosting the score.

King and Richard Coultas both took two wickets each, but it was with the bat that King really went to town.

King regularly lost partners with only Dave Herbert (20) making a useful contribution and it looked as though Beverley were home and dry until King's late blitz.
