Manager: Nicky Law

Stadium: Saltersgate

Capacity: 8,880

Last Season: Relegated from Division Two (24th)

Comings and goings

Out: Tom Curtis (Portsmouth, £150,000), Jamie Lomas, James Dooley, Neil Pointon, Tony Carrs, Mark Gayle (all released), Steve Wilkinson (Kettering, free)

In: Goalkeeper Mike Pollitt (Rotherham, free), centre-back Steve Tutill (Darlington, free), midfielder Jamie Ingledow (Rotherham, free), mid-fielder Sean Parrish (Northampton, free), striker Mark Jones (Wolves, free), striker Luke Beckett (Chester City, fee to be decided by tribunal)

One to watch: Mark Jones. Most eyes will be on the partnership of the Beckett, one of the sharpest of shooters in Division Three last season, and David Reeves, Chesterfield's top scorer in last season's ill-fated campaign, however Jones could emerge from the shadows to steal the high profile duo's thunder. Signed from Wolves on a free, the former Aston Villa junior was Michael Owen's strike partner at England Under-17 level and has seen his career hampered by injury.

Odds: Confidence is high at Saltergate despite dropping into the basement as the Second Division's bottom club last season. The signings of Pol-litt, Tutill and Beckett has given the side a strong spine and pre-season wins over Sheffield Wednesday and Derby County have seen season-ticket sales rocket. Much will depend on manager Nicky Law and how he fares with the pressure. Former skipper Law took over the reins from long-standing manager John Duncan at the end of last season and proved a hit with both fans and players.

However, the pressure is on. Formerly the club's football in the community officer, Law has been handed a one-year contract to win promotion at the first attempt. With City the first opponents, a poor start could see the high hopes quickly evaporate and with them Law.
