THOUSANDS of racegoers breathed a sigh of relief as today's meeting in York was given the go-ahead after a late inspection.

Overnight and morning downpours forced officials to carry out the 10.30am check.

Spokesman James Brennan said: "The inspection was carried out by the clerk of the course, with opinions also sought from jockeys and trainers." The total attendance for the season was expected to reach the 250,000 mark today for the first time ever in the modern era.
