City of York Ladies pulled back a two-goal deficit to come away with a 2-2 draw in their rearranged North League division one match at Timperley.

It was a familiar story for York who enjoyed territorial advantage but failed to gain reward from many penalty corners and were punished twice on the break by their opponents.

The Manchester-based side's first goal came towards half time when an isolated attacker beat the York defence for speed to score with a shot just inside York 'keeper Sarah Massen's right hand post. They added to that halfway through the second half when York again lost the ball upfield and were caught short of numbers in defence, providing Timperley with an easy goal.

It looked bleak for York but they rallied with two well-taken goals in the last quarter of the game.

For the first, veteran defender Ann Robinson - who had a fine game - ghosted forward to lay-off Paula Clough's right wing cross into the path of Sally Sleightholme who tapped in from short range.

Massen then produced the save of the match to keep York in the hunt and they responded when Lorraine Pearey fired Karen Howell's quickly-taken free-hit high into the net for a spectacular equaliser.

York could well have taken all three points when a yellow-card offence saw Timperley reduced to ten players for the last few minutes, but the home side held on until the final whistle.

Meanwhile, in Division Two of the Yorkshire League, City of York Ladies II ended a run of drawn games with a 2-0 win at home to Wakefield II.

After a goalless first half, Vicky Blair scored York's first after the break, Sue Draper getting the second.

In Division Seven, York III were awarded the points against York University who failed to provide an umpire and will have regretted that when they won 3-1 in the unofficial friendly game that followed.

Nestl Rowntree thrashed Costcutter York and District League newcomers Stillington 7-0 with goals by Lizzie Sedgewick (2), Jane Markland (2), Claire Trodden, Geg Fogg and Carole Carter.

City of York Under-16s girls found their opposition too strong when they played and lost three Yorkshire League games at Huntington School, failing to score all day.

In their first game, they went down 2-0 to a good Wakefield 'A' side, despite an outstanding display at sweeper by Sarah Greaves.

In the second match they lost 2-0 to a hard-working Doncaster outfit and in their third clash were defeated 3-0 by Hull YPI. In this last match, they did come close to scoring, with Ginette Poulton and Kate Longbotham both creating chances.
