History-maker Wayne Hall is hoping York City's late, late show in their lower reaches scrap with Torquay United will prove the spark that marks a Minstermen ascent.

The trustworthy defender provided an inch-perfect cross for Kevin Hulme's 88th minute winner on Saturday - the 3-2 win and three point haul lifting City up to 19th and to within three-points of mid-table respectability.

Now Hall believes the victory - City's 700th home win in the Football League - can be the springboard for a renewed climb up the table.

"Hopefully this will be the break that we need," Hall told the Evening Press.

"Torquay defended deep and got men behind the ball but we got the break in the end and it is three well deserved points. It was relief to get the win. We let a couple of sloppy goals in and the gaffer had a go at the back four at half-time which was rightly so.

"It is down to the back four to sort it out and hopefully we will do that next week.

"But we needed this win and I thought all in all we created the better chances and deserved the victory."

Significantly for Hall, Saturday's appearance was his 428th in a City shirt and lifts him to equal fifth-place with Tommy Forgan in the all-time appearance records.

He is now just seven games behind fourth-placed Gary Ford although the ever-dependable Hall insists he is taking just one game at a time.

"I haven't set myself any targets," he confessed.

"I will just keep plugging away and as along as the gaffer keeps picking me I will keep playing."

* Ex-York City favourite Jonathan Greening has added a star lot to the York City Supporters Club auction to be held at Bootham Crescent tomorrow night.

The auction is in aid of Wayne Hall's testimonial fund and takes place after tomorrow night's FA Youth Cup second round replay against Darlington, and "Ginner's" former team-mate Greening has provided his Manchester United shirt from last Wednesday's Champions' League clash with Dynamo Kiev.

The shirt has been signed by the whole of the Old Trafford squad on duty that evening, but sadly is relatively clean as Greening didn't get a taste of the action as a none-playing substitute.

City fans unable to attend the auction can make bids for the shirt from 7pm tonight by ringing 07989-720912 or they can e-mail bids on ycsc@citysupporters.co.uk
