City of York Ladies ended a poor run in division one of the North League with a double success in their weekend home games against Chester and County Durham side, Broom.

York enjoyed a much-needed boost to their season, coming back from two goals down to clinch a shock 3-2 win over previously unbeaten league leaders Chester, who had conceded just two goals in their previous seven games.

Weak York tackling allowed Chester to score a simple goal after ten minutes and it looked bleak for the home side when the fast-moving Chester attack added a second with a fine shot.

But a determined York hit back when Sam Binns and Karen Howells combined on the left wing to set up Sally Sleightholme, who scrambled the ball into the net at the second attempt.

Chester were then rattled before half-time when another Howells cross was touched in by debutant Claire Jackson.

It was even better for York mid-way through the second-half when Sarah Lawrence found Howells in space to score the decisive goal from a short corner and victory was ensured when Chester failed to put the ball into an empty York net in the last minute.

The re-arranged game against Broom was a scrappy affair with York failing to score until 15 minutes from time when Sally Sleightholme outpaced the Broom defence and lifted the ball over the keeper for a worthy winner.

In division two of the Yorkshire League, City of York Ladies II had a 3-0 home success against Northallerton, Dawn Hopkins (2) and Rachel Messias scoring the goals.

Acomb Ladies I had more chances to score than their opponents but lost 4-0 away to Adel second team.

Missing a few key players and injuries suffered during the match did not help Acomb's cause. Despite working hard as a team Acomb were unable to break through Adel's defence. Vicky Burden and Rachel Linfoot were strong in defence.

Tadcaster Ladies I won 2-1 at Cleckheaton, whose Debbie Parr capitalised on a defensive mix-up to put her side ahead.

Tadcaster came back strongly and Sarah Pedder neatly converted a short corner to equalise. She then hit the winner with a superb strike from the edge of the goal area.
