City of York I, the last remaining Yorkshire representative in the English Hockey Association Cup, crashed out at the fourth round to National League premier division leaders Canterbury.

They lost 8-0 in Kent with 22-year-old England hot-shot David Matthews scoring seven goals.

Matthews, last season's leading scorer in the premier division with 36 goals, put York to the sword with a late goal-blitz to end the visitors' brave resistance.

It was a long haul down to Kent on Sunday to face a side who had confirmed their status as one of the best sides in the country by winning 1-0 at Old Loughtonians the previous day.

But York battled hard and thanks to some resolute defending were only 2-0 down at half-time to goals by Simon Wicken and Matthews, who added his second with 15 minutes remaining. But Canterbury's superiors skills and fitness told in the end as Matthews showed the sort of sharp-shooting skills which earned him a Great Britain squad call-up in the summer, with five more goals.

It brought York down to earth after winning their first Northern Counties East League premier division game of the season in thrilling fashion on Saturday. They defeated Sheffield 5-4 at York University to move off the bottom of the table.

Sheffield took the lead and York's cause was not helped when Luke Griggs was forced to withdraw through illness and the home side were forced to restructure their side with Gawaine Hogg filling in impressively at sweeper.

Sheffield went 2-0 up after a short corner but Kyle Hogg pulled a goal back just before half-time and after the break two goals by Rob Hines put York in front.

The visitors levelled after another short corner and regained the lead soon afterwards. But York's high work-rate and pressure paid dividends with two strikes from James Gilbert to secure a welcome victory.

The first's delight was compounded by City of York II's 5-0 win at Sheffield II in Northern League East Two.

John McRory opened the scoring after 10 minutes with a fine solo effort and, despite missing a penalty ten minutes later, York's fine passing kept them in control and two close range finishes by Karim Ramli made it 3-0 at half-time.

York, playing their best hockey of the season, went on to add further goals by Rob Blackburn and Chris Dutton after the interval.

Missed chances cost City of York III their 100% record in Yorkshire League division four when they lost 2-1 at home by Sheffield University Bankers.

York led through Alex Fletcher, but Sheffield equalised after a short corner and capitalised on a breakaway after York failed to convert several opportunities.
