Retired York psychiatrist William Kerr has been cleared by a jury of raping two patients and indecently assaulting two others.

But the jury at Leeds Crown Court had still not reached a decision on another two allegations of rape, and 13 of indecent assaults, against another 13 patients.

The jury will continue deliberations on Monday, after 15 days of a special "hearing of fact" intended to determine whether he committed the alleged acts.

The former consultant, now aged 75, of Alne, near Easingwold, had been accused of abusing 16 former patients in the York, Harrogate and Ripon area between 1968 and 1988. He denied all the allegations during police interview in 1997 but a different jury decided earlier this year that he was not fit to plead.
