EASTENDERS might have been on the television, but the real drama last night was going on outside your window.

At about the time the good and gloomy folk of Walford were starting out, the moon was putting on its own more spectacular show. By 7.50pm, the moon was totally eclipsed, turning, for those who could see it clearly, into an orange-red disc.

As with the total eclipse of the sun in 1999, it was good to be reminded that nature can pull off tricks so stunning that man's more earthbound distractions are fleetingly shown in a dimmer light.

It's back to normal tonight, however. Coronation Street this time.
