Soldiers who fought to protect York from its worst flooding in living memory will be given the greatest honour the city can bestow.
City of York Council last night voted unanimously to offer the 2 Signal Regiment the Freedom of the City for its invaluable work during November's floods.
Round-the-clock work to lay sandbags along bursting river banks and evacuate residents from their homes undoubtedly saved the city from greater disaster.
The honour, which was proposed by the Lord Mayor of York, Shan Braund, and seconded by council leader Rod Hills, is expected to be bestowed at an official ceremony on January 27.
The Evening Press joined with City of York Council to call for the soldiers to be given the honour to demonstrate the city's appreciation of their help.
