Heworth will need to improve from Saturday's poor performance against Eccles if they are to trouble Batley Bulldogs in the Challenge Cup in two weeks time.

The Villagers went on a scouting mission to Batley yesterday but they will have more concerns over their own form than their NFP opponents.

Poor tackling was a feature of their 32-8 home defeat by Eccles which leaves them languishing in the lower reaches of the National Conference League first division.

Heworth started well when leading try-scorer Gavin Grant picked up a loose ball and raced 60 metres to score under the posts, leaving scrum-half Stuart Watson with an easy conversion.

But promotion hopefuls Eccles were soon level when some slack defence allowed centre Jason Viller to go over for a try which Dean Pickup converted.

Heworth got their noses back in front after 16 minutes with a Watson penalty for a high tackle.

Sadly that was to be the end of their scoring as Eccles ran away with it, despite being a player short on a couple of occasions as both Paul Raftery and Pickup spent time in the sin-bin for dissent.

Two tries in the space of a couple of minutes from Paul Smith and Dave Radcliffe, plus a conversion from Pickup, put Eccles into a 16-8 half-time lead.

Raftery bagged a brace in a three minute spell shortly after the break and substitute Alan Evans completed the scoring with a try 20 minutes from time.

Heworth had plenty of pressure on the Eccles line in the closing stages but were unable to break through the division's meanest defence.

Winger Neil Stephenson and forward Jason Gatus were Heworth's best players, while John Coulson and Dan Briggs were effective after coming on as subs.

Oulton Raiders, who take on York Wasps in Challenge Cup in a fortnight, continued their impressive run of form.

They moved up to third in the NCL premier division with a 41-6 win at Saddleworth Raiders.

Top man for the Raiders, and a player the Wasps must keep an eye on, was winger Gary Robb who scored two tries and landed six goals.
