An equaliser four minutes from time denied City of York Ladies victory at home to North League leaders Ben Rhydding, but the 2-2 draw was no less than York deserved.
York started nervously, going behind to a sixth-minute goal. But following coach Jerry Clough's tactical plan they were rewarded right on half-time when Lorraine Pearey equalised from a penalty corner.
Both sides missed scoring opportunities early in the second-half before Sally Sleightholme, whose speed constantly unsettled the visitors' defence, gave York the lead midway through the half from one of many York attacks.
With a strong-tackling midfield display from Cath Hewerdine and some good saves from 'keeper Sarah Massen, York were close to taking the much-needed three points until Rhydding scored their late goal from a penalty corner.
Sunday's Hockey Association Trophy quarter-final tie between the same two teams was subject to a late postponement, the umpires deciding that the pitch was unsafe following overnight snow.
In division two of the Yorkshire League, York II were awarded a 3-0 win, opponents Wensleydale being unable to raise a team.
In division seven, York III went to the top of the league following a resounding 6-0 away win against Tadcaster. Emily Sheath scored a hat-trick, the other goals coming from Becky Coppertwaithe (2) and Sam Clowes.
