I AM totally amazed at the view N Ashcroft puts forward on the forthcoming national travel scheme for pensioners (February 24). It is long overdue, and should be applauded and not derided as N Ashcroft thinks it should. It will replace the ad hoc schemes of various local authorities up and down the country. Some have been very generous, while others have been quite frugal and some giving nothing at all.

I live in Tadcaster which comes under Selby District Council and as a pensioner receive £8 a year in travel tokens which you tender for full priced fares. There is no such thing as a bus pass, never has been and with the bus fare to York being £3.20 return the £8 a year does not go very far.

The new national scheme will put every pensioner in the land on level pegging, which is to be applauded as just.
