STONEMASONS from across the country came to York to put their sculpting skills to the test in a day-long competition.
The National Stone Federation Intercities Competition was held at York College and contestants arrived from many different colleges.
York College's Royston Williams, 19, came second. Fellow student Matthew Haslam, 18 was also an entrant. The winner came from Bath.
A second contest will be held for Scottish students, then the top seven stonemasons will go forward to compete in the national Skill Build competition, which will see the top apprentice in the country being named.
Last year York College stonemasonry student Michael Goulding won the Skill Build competition; he will now go on to represent Great Britain in the Skill Olympics in South Korea, in August.
