WINNING and losing pay could be back on the agenda for York Wasps' players if a new money making scheme proves a success.

The 'fun-raiser' initiative was mooted at a recent meeting of the Association of Premiership Clubs and has been taken up by the Wasps.

The idea is that volunteers take round a scratch card containing 50 scratch-off stars, and ask people if they would like to make a donation to the Wasps.

Those willing to take up the challenge must rub off a star of their choice, under which will be an amount of money which they must donate. The amounts vary between 50p and a maximum of £5, and must be paid immediately.

All those taking part will receive a trivia scratch card and if they answer three questions correctly they go into a draw to win a holiday.

Any money raised will initially go towards clothing and equipment for the Academy team but, depending on how much money it brings in, could also be used to improve the first team squad's wages.

Chief executive Ann Garvey said: "A lot of money can be made if we get a lot of people willing to help on it. If it goes well we could possibly go back to winning and losing pay or match pay for the players.

"We need to get some volunteers to do it. I am willing to give them £10 for each full ticket they can sell."

Volunteers can take the cards round to fellow supporters on match days or try to get family and friends to have a go.

Troubled Doncaster Dragons are another club which is also believed to be getting involved in the scheme, which is available to all NFP clubs.

The Wasps will initially take part for a month to assess the viability of the scheme.

Any volunteers wishing to sell cards can see Ann Garvey in the club office at tomorrow's game or ring the club on 01904 634636 at any time.
