THE oldest resident of one East Riding village has planted a Millennium tree in honour of his special birthday.
Charlie Ross, of Barmby Moor, will turn 100 on May 31, and to mark the occasion the parish council asked him to plant an oak tree.
With his son and grandchildren standing by, Mr Ross planted the special Millennium tree on communal ground in the Holborn Estate in the village.
The tree was donated to Barmby Moor Parish Council by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, who gave out 100 oak trees to various villages to mark the Millennium.
The 15ft tree was planted on Saturday, and afterwards there was a reception at the Boot and Slipper pub.
Barmby Moor Parish councillor and East Riding of Yorkshire councillor John Cox said: "We are delighted that Charlie planted the Millennium tree for us.
"There's not many villagers who can boast a resident turning 100 this year, so we thought it would be a nice idea to mark the occasion.
"Indeed Charlie is well known in the village and served on Barmby Moor Parish Council himself many years ago."
