After the previous week's setback Malton got back to winning ways, although not without a few scares in their 24-17 Yorkshire Three success at Barnsley.

Having already amassed nearly 100 points in the two previous encounters against a spirited Barnsley this season another sizeable tally may have been too much to ask.

For much of the opening play Malton were penned into their own half.

But from the first break out from their own half the Malton pack made headway towards the Barnsley line and flanker Phil Ryan crossed for the opening points.

A mixture of good Barnsley defence and mysterious decisions combined to thwart Malt. However, they increased the lead when prop forward Tom Eddy took possession 20 yards out and drove his way over for a try which Nick Tyson converted.

It was Barnsley who got the next score when a weak 22 metre drop out was intercepted.

During Ryan's sin-binning Barnsley's right wing scored in the corner.

Almost from the restart Malton increased the lead, Carl Rushworth crashing over and Tyson converting. Shortly afterwards the Malton backs opened out and Tyson, taking the ball at pace, surged over.

Another decision denied Tim Casey a score and with five minutes to go Barnsley reduced the lead with a converted try from the right.

This wasn't a vintage show from Malton, but at least the points were won and league success is still there for the taking.

Leaders Heath wallopped Moortown 35-5, York RI maintained their impressive form with an easy 30-0 win over Hullensians and Skipton routed Halifax Vandals 42-9 as all the top sides won.
