The body of a man has been pulled from a river in the centre of York.
Police were called to Castle Mills Bridge, in Tower Street, after a passer-by spotted the body in the River Foss, just behind the new Travelodge Hotel.
Members of the Underwater Search Unit were brought in to retrieve the body after the alarm was raised at about 1.30pm yesterday.
The body of the man, who has not yet been identified, was taken to the mortuary at York District Hospital.
Chief Inspector Howard Harding, of York Police, said today that the body was decomposed, and a post-mortem examination was due to take place later today.
